Objectives:
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able
to:
v
Expose, explore, read and learn about poetry;
write poetry with a voice that creates images using literary and figurative
devices that develop a sense of your perspectives.
v
Recognize distinctive features of major poets,
styles of poetry, movements, and trends
in written and performed poetry.
v
Demonstrate an understanding of these works in
context, including, though not limited to, historical, philosophical, social,
political, religious, psychological, biographical, artistic backgrounds.
v
Employ critical thinking and college-level
methods and terminology of poetry analysis to reading and interpreting poetry
by producing well-developed, fluent writing that supports premises about
different works and utilizes logical
observations supported by textual examples.
v
Demonstrate continued understanding of MLA
conventions developing essays that integrate source material and incorporate
standard documentation and format.
Your task:
1.
Construct a book of 10 poems about your
viewpoints, experiences, beliefs, fears, dreams, etc.. The book of poetry
should have a cover and title and should, in some way, reflect on the elements
of poetry contained within. Each poem must be written on a separate page.
2.
For each poem, write a 1-2 paragraph
reflection/explanation.
3.
Write a 500 word justification/explanation of
the impact or role of spoken word poetry in today’s society. Consider social
trends, technology, historical perspective, genre, etc. Your justification
should have a minimum of 3 citations & a Works Cited page.
4.
Provide a compelling title.
5.

6.
Decide/design one piece to be shared with the
class
